Myopia (Short Sightedness)
If the eye is longer than usual or the lens is stronger than normal, the result is that the image instead of being focused onto the retina is instead focused in front of the retina.
This condition results in near objects being in focus and distance objects being out of focus. Thus short sighted people can see to read without their glasses but cannot see distance.
The one benefit of being short sighted is that beyond middle age, being short sighted helps these people to 'cheat' the presbyopia that occurs with age to some extent
Short sightedness is often confused with the normal ageing changes that start at about age 45 which result in inability to read and is called presbyopia.
