Cataract surgery involves removal of the cloudy lens from the eye and replacement with a new lens.
Modern surgery is performed through a 2mm opening in the eye, through which instruments can be inserted.
The technology used is called phacoemulsification and uses ultrasound energy to remove the cataract.
Once removed, a new lens is inserted in place of the old one.
