LASiK (laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is essentially a three-stage procedure:
- In the first step a thin corneal flap is created with a laser
- In the second step the excimer laser sculpts the cornea
- In the third step, the flap is then repositioned at the end of the procedure
Prior to using this method, eye surgeons had to cut the corneal flap with a blade. This technique is still in common use by many centres across Australia.
At Melbourne Eye Centre, however, we exclusively use the laser technique known as INTRALASE as it is the state of the art, using the accuracy and precision of the excimer laser. The corneal flap begins to adhere within a minute or two and vision improves within the first 24 hours of the procedure.
